Fishing

All of HUNTING DOWNUNDERS concessions have great trout fishing rivers right beside them. The trout fishing in the South Island is world renown, from the huge 30+ pound Rainbow trout in Twizel canals to the big, slow cruising Brown trout of the West Coast, virtually every waterway has trout!

Trout fishing is a great way to spend a relaxing time, casting into wild and/or calm waters while enjoying pristine scenery, and for the more experienced fly fishermen, there’s always the dream of catching “The Big One”.

Any fish kept (we release most fish caught but always keep enough to feed ‘the camp’) will be prepared for one of the meals. With our secret crumb recipe then fried fresh, or, salted and smoked, they’re certainly a hit on the menu.

If trout fishing isn’t your scene but you’d like a bit of fun with a handline, a lot of the rivers are well known for producing Eels of “Taniwha” (Monster) proportions! These are also beautiful fried fresh or smoked.
