With 25 years experience of Sika Deer Hunting and having taken over 25 trophy 8 point (4x4) heads, my passion now is sharing this experience with others.

Customers of Hunting Downunder get to exerience the thrill of securing their own trophy, whether you are looking for meat for the freezer, a skin for the floor or antlers for the wall.

Situated in the foothills of the 'Kaweka Ranges', Hunting Downunder is a ‘home away from home’ hunting outdoor retreat operating on private land in the sunny Hawkes Bay region.

With comfortable 2 bedroom accommodation you will experience the outdoor rural feel while still enjoying the home comforts of a soft bed and hot shower.

Its location allows beautiful rural views and is within 5 minutes drive of possibly the best free range sika hunting available and beautiful bush walks.

For the more adventurous, with Hunting Downunder you have the choice of various huts or wilderness locations to go ‘fly tent camping’.

From down on the banks of the Mohaka River where you can walk a few hundred metres to secure a deer or a few metres to land a fish, to up amongst the bush where during the season you’ll drift to sleep listening to the sound of roaring stags and moreporks (native owls).

DAily Rate $500 NZD Plus Stag

  • transportation from Napier/Hastings to camp
  • 1 night accommodation (client to arrive night prior to hunt)
  • 3 meals plus snacks
  • professional guide for 1 hunter ( plus 1 onlooker )
  • use of firearms included, ammunition priced separately

Meat Hunts

Management Stag $400 - $1000 NZD Per deer

(minimum three days recommended)

  • animal determined ‘management’ by guide, generally 5-7point stag
  • best hunted from March to July with March to May ‘rut’ or 'roar' time
  • venison butchered and bagged ready for the freezer
  • head caped and cleaned
  • headskin fleshed and salted ready for taxidermist
  • average value of meat per deer to take home $450 NZD
     (15kg prime venison @ $30/kg)

2009 Sika Trophy Stag Trophy Stag $3000 NZD Per deer

(minimum 5 days recommended)

  • 8 point ( 4x4 ) stag
  • best hunted March to May with mid April being peak ‘rut’ or ‘roar’ time
  • head caped and cleaned
  • headskin fleshed and salted ready for taxidermist
  • average value of meat per deer to take home $450 NZD
     (15kg prime venison @ $30/kg)

Management StagTrophy Hunt From $5,500 NZD

Hunt includes:

  • trophy stag (trophy stag price discounted if not obtained)
  • best hunted March to May with mid April being peak 'rut' or 'roar' time
  • head caped and cleaned
  • headskin fleshed and salted ready for taxidermist
  • venison butchered and bagged ready for freezer
  • 6 nights accommodation (client to arrive night prior to hunt)
  • professional guide for 1 hunter (plus 1 onlooker)
  • ‘taste of the wild’ cuisine, beverages and snacks
  • transport from Rotorua/Taupo airports, Napier/Hastings cities
  • visit to Mangatutu Hot Springs in the Kaweka Forest Park
  • use of firearms included, ammunition priced separately
     (*$100 NZD/day for extra non hunters - two max)

*Hunts tailored to suit individual needs/wants.
*All prices are GST Exclusive.
*Full prices must be paid on wounded and lost animals.
*50% deposit to be paid on booking hunt, balance to be paid 14 days prior to hunt.
